During this lab, we made magic sand. Magic sand is basically sand that can't get wet. What we did was get clean sand in a flat dish and sprayed scotch guard all over it to seal each grain of sand. The scotch guard is a water proofing spray. So when you spray it on the sand, it seals all the places that water can get the sand wet. I think that overall, this experiment was a success and a fail. First, we sprayed the scotch gaurd on the sand. We did just enough to give the sand a wet appearance, but not too much. We added the sand to the water, then tried adding the water the rest of the sand. When we did that and mixed it, the sand did get wet. When we first added the sand to the water. The presence of this hydrophobic compound(uses the grains of sand to adhere to one another and form cylinders (to minimize surface area) when exposed to water. When the sand is removed from water, it is completely dry and free flowing.
I worked with Lydia, Genevie, and Savreen for this lab. I worked with them because we all wanted to see how magic sand worked. I think we worked very well together. We all took turns when doing each task (pouring sand, spraying scotch guard, putting sand in water, documenting, etc.)
If I could redo this lab, I would have added more scotch gaurd to the sand. Since, it got wet when we added a lot of water to the sand. I think more scotch guard would have made it more water proofed and sealed more. I think there are too many ways to continue this lab. I suppose we could do other things with sand like make kinetic sand or try using scotch guard to make other materials waterproof. Some things I learned is how using a water proofing agent(scotch guard) works.
